Is Manaslu Harder Than Everest? A Trekker’s Guide to Choosing the Right Adventure

When planning a trek in the Himalayas, two names often come up  the Manaslu Circuit Trek and the Everest Base Camp Trek. Both are famous, beautiful, and adventurous. But many people ask:

Is Manaslu harder than Everest?

The short answer is: Yes, in many ways, Manaslu is tougher. But that doesn’t mean it’s better  or worse. Each trek has something unique to offer. Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand, even for someone trekking for the first time.

The Trails: Remote vs. Popular

Trekking to Everest Base Camp is a legendary journey in the heart of the Himalayas. The trail is well-marked, filled with cozy teahouses, cafés, and even WiFi in some places. You start with a thrilling flight to Lukla and then walk through beautiful villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, all the way up to Everest Base Camp (5,364m).

On the other hand, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is more remote.

You’ll trek through secluded mountain villages, cross lengthy suspension bridges, and climb through wooded valleys prior to arriving at the lofty Larkya La Pass (5,160m). Fewer trekkers come here, so it’s a bit wilder and less touched.

Verdict:

If you want comfort, Everest is easier.

For sheer adventure, Manaslu is more difficult yet more rewarding.

Permits & Trekking Regulations

Everest Base Camp is not difficult to get to. You just need two permits

Sagarmatha National Park Permit

Local Municipality Entrance Fee

You may hike on your own, although a guide is still recommended.

Manaslu Circuit, however, is in a Restricted Area. This means:

  • You must have a licensed guide.

  • You can’t trek solo a minimum of two people is required.

  • You need three permits:

    • Restricted Area Permit

    • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)

    • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Verdict:

Manaslu is harder when it comes to paperwork and planning.

Altitude & Physical Challenge

Both treks go above 5,000 meters, where the air gets very thin.

Everest Base Camp goes up slowly. You’ll have rest days in places like Namche and Dingboche to help your body adjust. The highest point is 5,364m.

Manaslu Circuit has the same elevation as Larkya La Pass (5,160m), but it is steeper and colder to ascend.  You will have further daily walking distances, and there are fewer opportunities to request help if anything goes wrong.

Verdict:

Manaslu is more physically and mentally demanding. If you have not had experience with high altitudes before, Everest might be less taxing.

 Crowds vs. Solitude

Everest is busy, especially during spring and autumn. You’ll have scores of other trekkers surrounding you, which can be exciting or stressful.

Manaslu, however, is serene. You’ll often have the trail to yourself. This is beneficial in enabling you to connect with nature and native society.

Verdict:

Manaslu is perfect for quietness and seclusion.

Everest is better if you like meeting other hikers and having more services.

Food & Accommodation

In Everest, the teahouses offer a wide variety of food pizza, noodles, pancakes, even coffee!

In Manaslu, the teahouses are more basic. You’ll eat lots of dal bhat (rice and lentils), soup, and simple snacks. It’s enough to keep you going, but less fancy.

Verdict:

Everest has more comfortable lodges and better food.

Conclusion: Which Trek is Right for You?

So, is Manaslu more difficult than Everest?

Yes , it’s more difficult in terms of planning, remoteness, and physical exertion.

Yet Everest can be demanding nonetheless, particularly with its extreme altitude and extended duration.
